Thai pongal festival πͺπ
Thai Pongal Festival is an important agricultural festival celebrated by the Tamil people. It is held to express gratitude to the Sun God, and is usually held on January 14 or 15.
“Pongal” means “to swell up”. When the Pongal food rises up, it symbolizes wealth and happiness.
A special dish called “Pongal” is prepared during this festival. It is prepared using new rice, milk and sugar (or jaggery), and is offered to the Sun God.
Rituals such as offering to the Sun God, respecting cows, and cleaning and decorating the house are performed during Thai Pongal days.
The Thai Pongal festival is celebrated for four days. The days are Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kanum Pongal.
