Ethnic groups living in Sri Lankaπ§π§ππ
1. Sinhalese
The Sinhalese are the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka. Their mother tongue is Sinhala and the majority follow Buddhism. The Sinhalese have their own unique cultural traditions, festivals (such as New Year) and dance forms.
2. Tamils
The Tamils are the second largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka. They live mainly in the northern and eastern regions. They speak Tamil and most follow Hinduism. Festivals such as Thai Pongal are important to them.
3. Sri Lankan Moors (Muslims)
The Moors follow Islam and speak both Sinhala and Tamil. They are spread across the country and are particularly involved in commercial activities.
4. Burghers
The Burghers are a mixed race of European (Portuguese, Dutch, English) and Sri Lankan ancestry. They are predominantly Christian. Most speak English.
5. Malays
The Malays are an ethnic group from Indonesia and Malaysia. They practice Islam and have their own distinct cultural identities.
Sri Lanka is a multicultural country where many different ethnicities live together. This diversity gives a great shape to the country's culture, food, languages, and festivals.
